Working hard for you
The Government have switched responsibility from local councils towards schools for careers advice, forcing schools to provide advice for pupils without transferring the funding. Alongside this pressures are heaped on Connexions careers services which have faced significant funding cuts.
The report questions the Government’s motives behind the changes, suggesting the Government are seeking to create a free market in careers services. Their claims were backed up by the National Careers Service Advisory Group who raised concerns that the re-organisation was “potentially damaging to young people’s lives”.
“When the Government came in last year they have cut services without putting replacements in place, this is not a responsible approach to dealing with the futures of young people. This report highlights the impossible position that Councils have been put in as a result of the cuts that the Government are making. It is not surprising that experts are describing their approach as disastrous.” Cllr Julie Dore, Sheffield Labour Leader.
